Tragedy struck yesterday in Lagos as a storey building, and another house located at No 171, Orodu Street, Ajegunle, Apapa area of the state, all belonging to Baale Onibada were gutted by fire.
Daily Sun gathered that the building housing the late Baale Onibada’s children and tenants’ shops were not left out. The fire, which started at about 9.30a.m, attracted sympathisers who assisted tenants to evacuate their belongings while street boys tried effortlessly to put out the fire with dirty water from the gutter.
Though no life was lost, property worth millions naira was destroyed before fire-fighters from Ajegunle Fire Service Station arrived the scene at about 11a.m.
The cause of the fire, Daily Sun investigation revealed was a spark from the machine of a welder hired by a tenant for a repair job in her shop. It was further gathered that a neigbour had cautioned the welder over the danger associated with the job, but the welder was urged to go ahead with the job. An eyewitness likened the resonating sound from the scene to a bomb blast. The woman who hired the welder, it was gathered deals in illegal sale of fuel, popularly known as ‘black market’ and was said to have stored about 50 litres of petrol in her shop.
“While the welder was welding the damaged iron in her shop, a neigbour cautioned her but she ignored him. Now, see the result of her stubbornness.
“We thank God the kids had all gone to school and the only baby in the house as at the time of the fire was rescued by good Samaritans,” said the eyewitness.
